Health authorities in Zimbabwe are on high alert following the emergence of 38 new suspected measles cases across the country in just one week, raising alarms about a potential resurgence of the highly infectious disease.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care confirmed the latest figures, which span nearly every province except Bulawayo. This development has reignited memories of the devastating 2022 outbreak that tragically claimed over 750 young lives.
So far in 2025, a total of 93 suspected measles cases have been recorded. The latest provincial data reveals cases in Mashonaland East (6), Masvingo (2), Harare (2), Mashonaland Central (1), Mashonaland West (1), Matabeleland North (1), Matabeleland South (1), and Manicaland (1). No fatalities have been reported as of April 3.
Health professionals are urging swift action, emphasising the importance of routine immunisation, especially in communities where vaccine hesitancy remains high.
Prominent health expert Dr. Johannes Marisa emphasised that while the current spike is concerning, measles remains entirely preventable through consistent vaccination campaigns and increased public education.
With memories of the previous crisis still fresh, officials are calling on families, local leaders, and community health workers to prioritise immunisation to prevent another public health emergency.
