Harare, 28 January 2025 – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing order on the roads by cracking down on illegal kombis and pirate taxis. In a press statement, the police emphasized that only registered kombis with proper documents will be allowed to operate as public service vehicles. This move is part of the ongoing operation “No to Mushikashika and Lawlessness on the Roads.”
The ZRP has warned that unregistered kombis and pirate taxis will not be permitted to conduct business. Kombi owners are urged to comply with the country’s transport laws by ensuring their vehicles are properly registered and meet the necessary safety requirements. Authorities have stressed that all kombis operating on the roads must have licenses issued by the relevant government departments.
Passengers have also been advised to avoid boarding unroadworthy kombis, including those with no registration plates or broken windows covered with cardboard. The police have asked the public to support road safety by avoiding transport at undesignated points, as this disrupts the smooth flow of traffic.
The police have also vowed to take strong action against corrupt officers who may be working with unregistered kombi operators. Some illegal transporters are reportedly working with criminals to carry out unlawful activities on the roads. Authorities are focusing on illegal kombis operating on the Chitungwiza–Harare CBD route, where some drivers drop off passengers before reaching designated points.
Commissioner-General of Police, Stephen Mutamba, has instructed police commanders to allow registered kombis to pass through checkpoints without unnecessary delays. The ZRP has assured the public that it will continue to enforce road laws to ensure order and safety on Zimbabwe’s roads.
