Zimbabwe has formally applied to join BRICS as part of its efforts to enhance economic collaboration with other nations, according to Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira.
BRICS is an intergovernmental alliance comprising some of the world’s leading emerging economies. The group—currently including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates—focuses on promoting peace, security, development, and economic cooperation.
During a recent visit to Moscow, Russia, Prof. Murwira confirmed that Zimbabwe has submitted its application to join the bloc.
“BRICS is one of the most important platforms for economic cooperation, founded on principles of mutual respect and sovereign equality,” he stated. “Zimbabwe stands to benefit from any system that upholds these principles, and BRICS aligns with that vision. We are working to meet the necessary requirements and await a response from the group.”
BRICS has been actively expanding its membership to strengthen global economic ties. In 2023, Egypt and Ethiopia became the latest African nations admitted to the bloc at a summit in Kazan, Russia. Other recent additions include Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
In January 2025, Brazil—set to hold the BRICS presidency—also announced Nigeria’s admission as a “partner country” within the alliance.
