President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced that Zimbabwe will suspend all tariffs on goods originating from the United States, in a move aimed at fostering deeper economic ties and promoting bilateral trade.
In a statement released on social media platform X on Saturday, President Mnangagwa said the decision is part of a broader strategy to facilitate the growth of American imports in the Zimbabwean market, while also creating opportunities for Zimbabwean exports to reach U.S. consumers.
“While the principle of reciprocal tariffs holds merit as a tool for safeguarding domestic employment and industrial sectors,” the President stated, “the Republic of Zimbabwe maintains a policy of fostering amicable relations with all nations, and cultivating adversarial relationships with none.”
President Mnangagwa emphasized that the suspension of tariffs reflects Zimbabwe’s desire to build a “mutually beneficial and positive relationship” with the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump.
“This action underscores our commitment to a framework of equitable trade and enhanced bilateral cooperation,” he said.
The suspension is expected to provide American businesses with easier access to the Zimbabwean market, potentially lowering prices for consumers and increasing product diversity. At the same time, local producers will be looking to capitalize on improved access to the U.S. market, especially in agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
Details regarding the implementation timeline and scope of the tariff suspension are yet to be announced.
