A 20-year-old man, Fidelis Chipungu, has been convicted by the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court for violating the ZIMSEC Act after impersonating another student to sit for a national mathematics exam. Authorities say Chipungu posed as Hilton Malunga to write the Mathematics Paper 1 at George Chipadza Secondary School on May 26, 2025.

Using Malunga’s national ID card, Chipungu successfully accessed the exam venue and completed the paper. However, his actions were exposed after he was summoned to the Deputy Headmaster’s office and admitted to the deception. The invigilator filed a report, triggering Chipungu’s arrest by local police.

The court handed Chipungu a two-month prison sentence, fully suspended on the condition that he completes 70 hours of community service. The prosecution emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of national examinations.

In a public bulletin released by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the incident was condemned as a serious breach of academic ethics.
