A 42-year-old Beitbridge man will spend the next 18 years in prison following his conviction for the rape of a 9-year-old neighbor. The Beitbridge Regional Court delivered the sentence this week after finding the man guilty of the predatory attack that occurred last year.

The court heard that on July 12, 2025, at around 8:00 p.m., the young girl was playing with other children at her homestead. Her grandmother was asleep inside the house at the time. The offender arrived at the scene, grabbed the minor by her hand, and forcefully dragged her into a nearby bush.

To ensure she could not raise the alarm, the man covered the victim’s mouth with his hand. Once they were in the thicket, he forced the child to the ground and proceeded to assault her. The harrowing ordeal was only interrupted when the victim heard the voices of people nearby calling out her name.

Taking advantage of the distraction, the girl managed to return home and immediately disclosed the abuse to her grandmother. The matter was promptly reported to the police, leading to the man’s arrest and subsequent trial.

In a statement following the sentencing, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) condemned the attack.

“The offender’s actions against a defenseless minor are a serious violation of the child’s rights and the law,” the authority noted. Officials further urged communities to remain vigilant and report all cases of abuse to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice and children remain protected.
